With the new classification system going into effect for the 2016 season and some defections out of Division III, Heartland Athletic Conference football will look a little different next year with three six-team divisions.
All teams will play five division games and four crossover games.
There is one addition this year — Central Mountain — is now a full-fledged football member this season and will play in Division I. Michael Nines won’t be returning to the sideline for Central Mountain this season. He was replaced by former Montgomery coach James Reidinger earlier this year.
Central Mountain will be the lone Class 5A team in the division. The other five teams in the division are Jersey Shore, Mifflinburg, Selinsgrove, Shamokin and Shikellamy. The Bulldogs, Seals, Indians and Braves will all be Class 4A in next year’s new six-classification system. Mifflinburg is the lone Class 3A team playing in Division I.
The most interesting nonleague matchup new to the schedules in Division I comes with Shikellamy and Williamsport facing off on Sept. 23. That could be a big points boost for the Braves, as Williamspoint is a Class 6A school.
Division II will feature Danville, Lewisburg, Milton, Montoursville, Mount Carmel and Southern Columbia. The Black Panthers and Warriors drop down from Division I. The Ironmen and Green Dragons join Milton and Montoursville as Class 3A schools, while the Red Tornadoes and Tigers will be in Class 2A.
Division III will be Bloomsburg, Central Columbia, Hughesville, Loyalsock, South Williamsport and Warrior Run. The Blue Jays and Defenders drop down from Division II. All of the Division III schools will play Class 2A in 2016 except for Loyalsock, which will be Class 3A.
Montgomery and Muncy are no longer in the HAC.
The teams will play a scrimmage on Aug. 20 and opening night of football season will be Aug. 26. The regular season will wrap up on Oct. 28 and the first round of the district playoffs will begin on Nov. 4.
